In Our Toaster: The First Lenwich in 1989

Before Lenwich became a New York staple, it started with two brothers and one shop.

In 1989, the Chu brothers opened the very first Lenwich on 84th Street and Columbus Avenue with a simple goal: make great sandwiches, do it right, and treat everyone like a regular. No shortcuts. Just honest food for a city always on the move.

That small shop on 84th Street is where their journey began. While Lenwich has since moved a couple blocks away, that corner will always hold a special place in our hearts. It’s where habits were formed, relationships were built, and the foundation for everything that followed was set.

A lot has changed since then — the city, the pace, the menu — but the heart of Lenwich hasn’t. We’re still committed to fresh, made-to-order sandwiches and the same care the Chu brothers put into every bite from day one.

This September, we’re proud to look back at where it all began — and grateful for everyone who’s been part of the journey since.
