In Our Toaster: Always on a Roll in NY and NJ

Always on a Kaiser Roll
There’s something about a Kaiser roll that just feels like home — if your home is in New York or New Jersey, that is. To outsiders, it’s “just a roll.” But around here, it’s the gold standard. While other regions go for ciabatta or brioche, we’re stuffing our Kaiser rolls like it’s a sacred ritual.
🥖 Brought Over, Baked In 👩🏫
The Kaiser roll’s roots trace back to Austria, brought here by German and Eastern European immigrants who settled in NY and NJ. Local bakeries adapted it into what we know today: a crispy crust, fluffy inside, and that signature pinwheel top.
It quickly became a deli and diner staple — and it's been holding our sandwiches together ever since.
🗽 The Roll That Built Breakfast — and More
Sure, a bacon-egg-and-cheese on a roll is a rite of passage. But the Kaiser roll isn’t just for mornings. Around here, it’s the go-to for all kinds of sandwiches, from tuna melts to grilled chicken to pastrami.
It’s strong, soft, and just the right amount of crunchy — to handle the big flavors we love.
📍It’s a NY + Jersey Thing
You won’t find Kaiser rolls dominating menus in LA or Chicago — this is a regional icon. From Brooklyn bodegas to Jersey diners, it’s everywhere.
Outside of NY and NJ? You might not even see one at all. And that’s exactly why we love it.
🥪 Long Live the King
At Lenwich, we know the power of a good roll. That’s why you’ll find it under everything from breakfast favorites to bold deli creations. The Chickavo? On a roll. Buffalo chicken? Roll. Tuna pesto? Roll.
It’s not a trend. It’s a tradition.
And around here, we’re always on a roll.
From deli counters to backyard picnics, the Kaiser roll’s holding strong. This July 4th, make it local. Make it Lenwich. 🎇
